Our Camping Experience
Setting Up Camp
We had the pleasure of spending a couple of days at Raccoon Lake State Recreation Area. Let me tell you, it did not disappoint. The campsite was spacious and had all the amenities that one would need for a comfortable camping experience. The site we stayed at had a picnic table, a large tree-covered area, and a designated spot for a campfire. The grounds were well-maintained, and the staff was friendly and helpful.
Campfire and Amenities
It’s been a few years since we went camping, but our campmates came well-prepared. We mainly brought our tent, an air mattress, a sleeping bag, extra blankets because it was still cold at night, and some campfire food for dinner and breakfast. There were two tents for the four of us. We set up both tents on flat ground pretty far apart to allow for snoring. We also set up a shower tent with a portable toilet. This turned out to be awesome for the ladies, even though it was only a 5-minute walk to the park’s facilities.
Exploring the Park
Activities at Raccoon Lake
During our stay at Raccoon Lake State Recreation Area, we had the opportunity to explore the surrounding area. Raccoon Lake is a beautiful body of water that is perfect for fishing, kayaking, and swimming and is right next to the park. The lake is clean and clear, and there is plenty of fish to catch for those who enjoy fishing.
Hiking Trails and Scenic Views
Additionally, there are several hiking trails in the park that offer stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The well-marked trails range in difficulty from easy to moderate. I highly recommend taking a hike to see the beauty of the area for yourself.
The Raccoon Encounter
One of my favorite things about the park was the peacefulness and quietness that it offered. It was refreshing to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and simply relax in nature. The campsite was quiet at night, allowing me to fall asleep to the soothing sounds of nature.
One thing to note is that the raccoons are quite active in the area, especially at night. While they are cute, they can be quite persistent when it comes to getting into your food. It is important to keep all food items in a secure container or cooler. This will prevent them from getting into it. We were able to put most things in our cars. One cooler and one table with zip-up shelves stayed out. We put carabiners on the zippers to try to lock them shut. The raccoons were quite bold and began inching closer and closer to our camp about an hour before dusk. Despite this minor inconvenience, we found that the raccoons were fun and interesting to watch.
Conclusion
Raccoon Lake State Recreation Area is a beautiful destination for anyone looking to experience the beauty of nature while camping in a tent. The campsite offers all the amenities that one would need for a comfortable stay. The surrounding area offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities. While the raccoons can be a bit of a nuisance, they add to the charm of the park. I highly recommend adding Raccoon Lake State Recreation Area to your list of camping destinations in Indiana.
